FLORA captures the bizarre and wonderful plant world that I pass on my walks. Often scrubby and rangy plants produce the most beautiful and surprising blooms. I am less interested in the name of the plant than in how it displays its colours and shape.
Appearances sometimes betray what lies beneath

The movement of water stops briefly for an instant, always transient. Traces will sometimes be left but only for a moment.
Black Beach - 2018
Plants considered past season, withered or neglected are often more alive in their transformation.
I began this series of photographs while touring cultural sites. I noticed that light from windows was often partially blocked, creating an alternative presence to the art. In some places, translucent light passed through fabric; mysterious and beautiful, put there to protect artifacts and paintings from harmful light. In others, the fabric is a covering, a signal that there is no entry. Still others, it is the object in or from the window that fascinates.
Photograms are like gesture drawings; quick impressions. The enlarger light blocked or filtered through the plant to light sensitive paper, often resulting in unexpected transformations. Initially negative images, I often make positive transfers. The project began in 2014 and is ongoing.
